Maaike Kallenborn in Algeria
Thousands of Deaths
"A few days after the most important discoveries that would prove the existence of the Tritonis Sea," Maaike said, "We got stuck in a battle between terrorists and the Algerian army."
"Using helicopters and F16's the army destroyed more than 80 percent of the 10.000 terrorist forces."
Peter: "Eager to focus the world on their fundamentalist principles, the terrorists targeted us. Guarded by unidentified, armed men in four-wheel drives and unbelievable but true, desert paratroopers on camels carrying snipers, the authorities planned our escape to Mali.
In order to save our lives, three special agents were instructed to put our Mercedes Unimog and all the equipment on a special prepared Volvo truck. Despite the trap set at the Mali desert town of Kidal it all went well. Pirates, working together with the corrupt local authorities and the terrorists, tried to attack us. We were luckily saved by six commanders joining the Special Assistance Unit of t he Mali Army."
Crossing the Dessert
"We went through Mali and Niger, in order to continue our research around Lake Chad," explained Maaike. "There again we ran into terrorist activities.
We escaped taking the most strenuous desert route one can think of. During this trip a wound on Maaike's hand maltreated in an isolated hospital in Niger, became seriously infected. In the capital of Chad, N'Djamena, Maaike was hospitalised by the French Legionnaires, who were present with a battalion of 400 men to protect Western civilians threatened by the civil war in the Congo and the terrorist activities in the Sahara. They advised not to continue our trip. According to their information we would be murdered as soon as we passed the frontier of the Congo."

Media
Around Lake ChadAfter five months Maaike and Peter left Africa by plane from Douala, Cameroon. Tired but satisfied. The mission itself was completed. They fulfilled their quest and found what they were looking for: the Tritonis sea!! The expedition was published in several magazines like 'Aktueel' (1.250.000 readers) and 'Computer Idee' (850.000 readers). In December 2000 Maaike and Peter published the novel 'The Ring', which attracted the attention of both the Dutch and the international media.
