'The Ring' is the first paperback in the Maya adventure series. Maya, a Caribbean born female adventurer and anthropologist, searches the treasures of the past.

In 'The Ring' Maya gets involved in the Algerian Civil War that caused since 1991 more than 120.000 lives. Guarded by the Algerian SAS she runs for her life through the astonishing beauty of the Sahara dessert. Chased by Fundamentalist leader Acham, Tuareg rebels and pirates she crosses Niger and Chad, where finally the most famous French Legionnaires interfere. The authors of ‘The Ring' gathered the information in 1999 during a five month expedition through the Sahara dessert (for information click here) that was published tenth of times in Dutch magazines. The authors studied the political situation in North Africa, the role of Islamic Fundamentalist in the Algerian Civil War and life, history and nature in the Sahara dessert. The research resulted in an astonishing book of 159 pages, ISBN 90389 1081 9, original version Dutch language. English version June 2003. A CD-ROM based upon authors' expedition (English version) is available. American and Arabian publisher wanted.

The screaming sound of the tires brakes the hills south of Oran. Behind a VW-van the Unimog stops. Silence. Puppets on a blood painted street. Maya watches the cutthroats. Dark red. Six or seven. She opens the door. Tears filled with hatred. On her left a little child, maybe two years old, sliced from teeth to tooth. On the other side hidden in the bush a woman, naked. No need to guess. "God forgiven animals!!" She jumps on the ground followed by her German shepherd dog Remco. Her eyes focus at an eighteen-year-old boy protecting a little girl. His arms wrapped around her tiny body. Maybe he screamed. Whatever. She sighs and looks at the dog that crawls against her body. Remco is, or better was, the number one military dog of the Dutch Sixth Airborne Division that guarded nuclear missiles. The dog wraps his nose against her leg and disappears without making a sound. She knows that he is looking for troublemakers like they taught him so many times. After a few moments Maya succeeds in controlling her emotion and starts to analyze the situation. In Ain-El-Arba she got warned that the center of the terrorist attacks moved from Algiers to the mountains two hundred kilometers south of the harbor town Oran. Each day tenth of people were slaughtered by Muslim Fundamentalists. Brutally murdered by cutting their throats. She was told that fanatics dressed in stolen uniforms built roadblocks and killed the ones who got trapped: men, women, and babies. For that reason she traveled under the protection of convoys and escorts armed with Kalashnikovs. However, her last escort of three men disappeared a few hours ago.
