From Lisbon it is about 700 miles to Las Palmas on the island Gran Canaria (Canaries). Between May to October you will have nine out of ten a beautiful sail. Most of the time there will be blowing a northeasterly between 17 and 25 knots. During the winter you might encounter a southwesterly gale caused by a depression from the African continent, but in fact the closer you get to the Canaries the more consistent the weather will be with all the year around a northeasterly wind.

Round-trip
If the Canaries is your final destination, you can return to Europe over the Acores, which is by a northerly wind a little bit uncomfortable. Not dangerous, but unpleasant because you sail hard on the wind. The distance is about 700 miles.
Once entered the Acores you lift with the westerlies back to the place where you came from. In one line to Falmouth and beyond or first to Lisbon or Porto which will shorten your days at open sea. If you are not overtaken by a depression quite comfortable indeed. Another way to go is to sail under the African coast to the Portuguese city Lagos and follow the Portuguese coast till Porto. You will find during the summer months light winds if any wind at all and you will have to motor-sail quite a lot. A round-trip Northern Europe - Canaries - Acores - Northern Europe (about 4.000 miles) will take about three to four months and can easily be realized between May and August.
