This month the Surinam police got one poacher with over 100.000 eggs in his van and two Leatherbacks. He was on his way to the local market in Paramaribo. Maaike and Peter spotted in a wooden canoe from the sea the camp of poachers alongside the beach of Surinam. They informed the park rangers who refused to investigate. Furious they demand to put ashore to do the investigation themselves. The man in charged refused angrily and later someone else whispered that his brother was involved in poaching. The manager of the camp where tourist watch turtles is fired. He was involved in poaching eggs for more than two years.

Of all the eggs laid on Surinam beaches yearly over 1.2 million are sold on local markets. By the way: it is very easy to catch the poachers because the beaches where the turtles lay their eggs is only four of five miles wide.
