Circumventing Bonaire / Mile Making

Bonaire Salt Works

Sailing Around Bonaire or Miles Making

Many visitors but also locals, would love to sail around Bonaire or just making miles for endorsement of their sailing qualifications. We, being the skippers (both Yachtmaster Ocean with combined 150,000 NM experience), offer such a trip on board of the 50ft Ocean Racer CrossRoads.

Your participation will be honored with a signed certificate of competence which carries your name, the miles and the track you made.

Note that sailing around the island Bonaire, depends on the weather. If we arrive at the Salt Pans while turning north and we find that the seas are too rough and/or the winds too strong, we must tack back and stay inshore. Then we sail around Klein Bonaire towards Slagbaai at the far west side of Bonaire for a lunch and sail later close to the wind along the coast towards Kralendijk.

The 50ft Ocean Racer CrossRoads, being the only charter yacht in Bonaire that is capable to comfortably offer such a trip, present this adventure on your doorstep.

Departure at 08.00 from Club Nautico, a few hundred meters from Karelse Bar. We prefer that everyone participate in an active sailing role varying from winch, rope and sail handling to helming and navigation. Time of arrival between 16.00 and 17.00 at Club Nautico.

Costs all-in: morning snacks, a hard-core sailors lunch, coffee/tea and soft drinks, cleaning.

Not included: personal insurances (health care, belongings).

Participants: 95 USD pp

We will have a basic lunch, coffee, tea and snacks on board. However, if you wish to have a gourmet meal and a nice Cabernet-Sauvignon, please feel free to take your diet on board.

Toilet on board.

A maximum of 10 participants.

We pick you up at Karelse Bar (see Course & Location tab).

On board of the CrossRoads we have an introduction and safety briefing, discuss the expected weather and select the persons who wish to play an active part in the sailing: sail trim and handling, winch and rope handling, helming, navigation etc.

We start with a fast beam reach leg, heading in an easterly direction, following the coast of the Island. We will enjoy beautiful flat waters and the adrenaline rush from the accelerating speed.

Passing the Salt Works we turn to the north, into the wind. Here we decide whether the waves are too rough and/or the wind too strong to continue. If so, we tack and change course to Klein Bonaire and from there to Slagbaai, Washington Park for having a lunch. Then we return beating the wind to Kralendijk.

If we continue sailing around Bonaire, we pass Lac Bay and turn finally to the northwest, following the northern coastline of Bonaire. At Washington Park we turn to the south, passing Slagbaai.

At the southwest corner we are heading towards the east, an on-the-wind track, passing Bopec and Landhuis Karpata, If we are lucky we can do this in one leg, but mostly we have to tack. The last few miles we sail close to the beautiful coastline.

The estimated time of arrival at Karelse Bar, weather permitting. Here you receive your signed certificate of competence, while enjoying a rum/coke, gin/tonic, beer or a glass of wine on the house.
